Booster vaccination: when does it make sense to refresh the corona vaccination protection?

How long does the vaccination protection against Corona last? When is a booster refreshment necessary? Biontech boss Ugur Sahin has now given specific data.

Mainz – Corona is picking up speed. On Mondays, 15,513 new infections, plus 201.1, the highest incidence value since the beginning of the corona pandemic: The fourth wave hit Germany hard. The numbers mentioned come from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) and reveal one thing: Currently, more people in Germany are infected with the coronavirus than ever since the beginning of the pandemic.

According to the figures from the RKI vaccination dashboard from Monday morning, 67.1 percent of Germany’s population is fully vaccinated, and 69.7 percent have received at least one vaccination dose. Most people who are currently infected with Corona have not yet been vaccinated or at least not fully vaccinated. Nevertheless: Vaccination breakthroughs occur again and again. The RKI writes in the current weekly management report of “a total of 145,185 probable vaccination breakthroughs”.

When does the vaccination protection against Corona decrease? Biontech boss names data

Accordingly, most vaccine breakthroughs to date have occurred in relation to the number of vaccine doses administered after vaccination with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. This is followed by the vaccines from Astrazeneca, Moderna and Biontech. It is therefore not surprising that Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) has now spoken out in favor of a booster vaccination. As far as possible everyone who is fully vaccinated should receive a vaccination booster.

“Data from the clinical trial show that antibody levels begin to drop around the seventh, eighth or ninth month after the vaccination, so that infection can also occur,” said Biontech boss Ugur Sahin about the vaccine at Bild am Sonntag of his company.

He went on to explain: “We also observe that the course of the disease in vaccinated people is usually moderate in the event of an infection and that it rarely leads to severe courses. And we have study data showing that a booster restores vaccination protection. This also applies to the Delta variant. “

Corona vaccination: Jens Spahn wants boosters for everyone

As of Saturday, November 6th, almost 2.7 million people in Germany received a booster vaccination. Two days earlier, after the conference of health ministers, Spahn had emphasized that boosters should be “the rule, not the exception”. Due to the prioritization of first and second vaccinations, previously sick people, older people and medical staff should be given preference.

Basically, however, so-called booster vaccinations should be “possible for everyone” after six months, as Bavaria’s Health Minister Klaus Holetschek (CSU) emphasized on the Thursday after the conference. (Nico check)
