Captain Kirk flies into space – with a rocket from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos

For decades he explored the infinite worlds of the cosmos as Captain Kirk in Star Trek. Actor William Shatner is now really flying into space for the first time.

Van Horn – “Space, infinite expanses”: Actor William Shatner, who became known as Captain Kirk in the science fiction series Star Trek, is now flying into space in reality. The 90-year-old will be on board on October 12 for the next flight of the private space company Blue Origin from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, announced Blue Origin on Monday (04.10.2021).

With the launch of the Blue Origin rocket, Shatner will be the oldest person to ever fly into space. “I’ve heard about space for a long time,” Shatner was quoted as saying. “I am now taking the opportunity to see him for myself. What a miracle. “On the short message service Twitter, the 90-year-old added:” It is never too late to experience new things. “

Captain Kirk: Star Trek actor William Shatner doesn’t go into space alone

The American celebrity portal TMZ had already reported in September that the Canadian actor, who played Star Trek Captain James T. Kirk in the cult series from 1966, will be on board for the next Blue Origin mission.

Blue Origin Vice President Audrey Powers will also be flying with the space mission on Tuesday next week. In addition to the two, the former NASA engineer Chris Boshuizen and the entrepreneur Glen de Vries are said to be on board.

Blue-Origin: Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has already flew into space

Company founder Bezos himself flew into space on Blue Origin’s first manned flight in July. Together with his brother Mark, the 18-year-old Dutchman Oliver Daemen and the 82-year-old US pilot Wally Funk, he experienced weightlessness for several minutes on board the spaceship “New Shepard”. Daemen and Funk at this point were the youngest and oldest humans to ever fly into space. The entire flight only takes around eleven minutes.

On their adventure, the crew crossed the Kármán Line, located a hundred kilometers above sea level, which, according to international definition, marks the boundary to space. Bezos was thus a few kilometers higher than the British entrepreneur Richard Branson, who had completed a flight into space nine days earlier with a spaceplane from his own company Virgin Galactic.
