Carolina Gaitán's "Malicia" returns

The telenovela “Wild Flower” arrives again from the hand of Telemundo Internacional. The Colombian actress remembers what the experience was like playing her character in this production.

The world knew Wild Flower ten years ago. Its first episode aired on August 2, 2011 and, since then, the story of Amalia Monteverde is remembered by thousands of viewers who followed step by step the plot starring the Venezuelan actress Mónica Spear, whom the cast remembers with great affection after she tragically passed away with her husband Thomas Henry Berry, in Venezuela.

In the soap opera, Mónica plays a woman who must take care of her three sisters after losing her parents and tries to flee from that stormy past, moving to Nueva Esperanza, a small town that is starting out in the oil industry. Being there, she will do everything in her power to protect her sisters and get them to stay by her side, but for that she will be forced to take the path of prostitution. It is there that it receives its nickname “Wild flower”.

The decision to broadcast the telenovela by the hand of Telemundo Internacional was born as a tribute to the actress, who was already recognized for her performances in productions such as Mi prima Ciela , Calle luna, calle sol and The perfect woman , in addition to having been Miss Venezuela in 2004.

Wild Flower, based on the best seller The Dark Bride, by the Colombian writer Laura Restrepo, was recorded in different settings in Colombia and has a diverse cast including the Ecuadorian actor Roberto Manrique, the American Tony Dalton, the Venezuelan Norkys Batista and the Colombian Carolina Gaitán.

Carolina arrives again in the role of Alicia “Malicia”, a character that marked her personal and professional life and that she remembers as “one of those characters that I love to play, because not only am I acting, but I also have a performance on stage” , he comments. Although ten years have passed since the first time that Wild Flower was transmitted, the actress remembers the bond that existed between the entire cast, but above all she has in mind Monica Spear, who was her great friend and partner during the filming.

“Monica was a sweetie, she was always with her little girl… it was very nice to see her be a mother while she was an actress. She managed to combine the two in a beautiful way, taking into account that being the protagonist of a production like this while you are a mother is not easy at all, but she always achieved it, ”says Gaitán.

It was not the first time that the actress was close to roles of this style, as she had worked in various productions such as Satanás , Zona Rosa and Gabriela, Giros del Destino . However, Gaitán assures that what most attracts him when it comes to interpreting characters like “Malicia” is the field work for the construction of the character. “I approached sex workers in reality, they all have different lives. In fact, that’s one of the reasons why I’m an actress, because I can be in someone else’s shoes and feel empathy, regardless of the character’s realities, ”she says, adding that it is essential for her to know the lives of her characters and, above all, never judge them.

With “Malicia”, Carolina not only had the opportunity to act, but also to sing, and that fusion between her two great passions was what made this character a special experience, ensuring that viewers will see a talented woman, a performance worthy of admiration and also very sensitive, highlighting that it is the Colombian quota within the bunch of women that make up the cast.

“With the Telemundo network I have made two characters who are singers. After ‘Malicia’ I played Lola Calvo in Celia , with this role I won my first Tu Mundo award from the Telemundo network. ‘Malicia’ and Lola Calvo might look alike because they are singers, but they are completely different universes. Lola Calvo is a Cuban woman and her story takes place in the seventies… it is another setting with a different plot, but I really enjoyed both characters, ”says Gaitán.

Although other roles came after “Malice”, the actress says that for her it is crucial that each character is authentic, that it does not have similarities with interpretations she has already done. “The last thing I want in my history as an artist is to repeat myself. When it comes to creating another character, I feel that each one is far from the other. It’s great to see when the actors are versatile, because they really transform and build diverse and different universes ”, he adds.
