Change to winter time in Spain: Should we set the clocks back or forward?

In general, we are all clear when to change the clocks to enter the winter or summer time. The time change for October 2021 will take place on October 31 at 03:00. Since 1996, winter time always comes in on the last Sunday of October.

However, there is something that creates a lot of confusion: Should the clocks be advanced or backward? In this case, the winter time consists of setting the clocks back one hour, so that at 03:00 it will be 02:00 . This means that in Spain we will enjoy one more hour during the early hours of Saturday to Sunday.

Once it takes effect, it will dawn and dusk earlier . Little by little the days will diminish until the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. In Spain, daylight hours are just 9 hours and 17 minutes. This 2021 will take place on December 21.

What are the health effects?

As experts indicate, the time change in October can affect the health of people , especially babies and the elderly. Daylight acts as a signal for circadian rhythms. For this reason, from a physiological point of view, the time change causes a small mismatch between the external signals received by the body (sunlight and temperature) and the internal signals (circadian rhythms).

The symptoms are very similar to those of jet lag: drowsiness, tiredness, fatigue, irritability, lack of concentration and appetite … Circadian rhythms need approximately three days to regulate again.

Will it be the last time change?

The European Commission approved eliminating the biannual time change in EU member countries in April 2019. However, it was something very hasty, so it was agreed to delay it to 2021 .

Therefore, countries that stayed with daylight saving time would change their clocks for the last time in March 2021, and those that stayed with winter time would do so in October 2021.

But this year will also not be the last in which we advance and delay the clocks because the countries do not reach any consensus . In Spain, a commission of experts was created to analyze what was the best time, but they did not reach any conclusion.

According to a survey carried out by the Sociological Research Center (CIS) in 2019, 65% of Spaniards prefer summer time.
