In South Korea, the company RNL Bio has just carried out its first commercial cloning by creating five identical puppies from tissues of a deceased Pit Bull Terrier . Its owner, Bernann McKinney, kept tissue from her pet's ear in an American laboratory for almost a year at minus 200 ° C before it was cloned, for which she has paid $ 50,000.
Ra Jeong-Chan, CEO of RNL Bio , has assured that the company is able to clone up to 300 dogs next year. It even plans to expand its market and become known to camel owners in the Middle East.
But Jeong-chan will have to work hard, as many previous similar business projects have failed miserably. This is the case of the US company Genetic Savings and Clone (GSC), which after demonstrating its ability to clone cats in 2004, had to close due to lack of customers.
On the other hand, RNL Bio will not be short of competitors. The California-based company Bioarts International recently launched the Best friends again program to auction off the possibility of cloning five dogs. In addition, last month he announced his intention to clone Trakr, a German shepherd who helped rescue survivors from the rubble of the World Trade Center in New York , considering him the dog "most worthy of being cloned."
