The isotonic drinks that we consume regularly to replace fluids and salts when we sweat while doing sports should be replaced by coconut milk , according to a study presented at the last meeting of the American Chemical Society. According to Chhandashri Bhattachar and his colleagues at Indiana University (USA), this natural drink contains five times more potassium than the Gatorade or Powerade that athletes usually consume. "Every time you have cramps in your muscles, potassium helps you eliminate them, so coconut water is the most suitable liquid to replace the nutrients that your body loses when you exercise," explains Bhattachar.
On the other hand, since the diet usually contains little potassium and a lot of sodium (contained in table salt), coconut milk could help eliminate this imbalance, which scientists describe as negative. People who consume a lot of potassium and little sodium have twice the risk of dying from heart disease and a 50% higher risk of dying from other types of diseases.
Three hundred milliliters of coconut water contain more potassium than a banana . Besides that this substance is very rich in antioxidants.
