Corona case numbers in Germany are falling – RKI expects distorted data over the holidays

The number of corona cases will decrease on Thursday (December 24th, 2021). The RKI expects the data situation in Germany to be inaccurate over the Christmas holidays.

Frankfurt / Berlin – The nationwide seven-day incidence has fallen again compared to the previous day. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) stated the value of new corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week on Friday morning (December 24, 2021) as 265.8. For comparison: on Thursday the corona value was 280.3. A week ago the nationwide incidence was 331.8 (previous month: 404.5).

The health authorities in Germany reported 35,431 new corona infections to the RKI within one day. This is evident from the numbers that reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 4:54 a.m. Exactly one week ago there were 50,968 infections.

The RKI has counted 6,959,067 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not recognized.

RKI fears inaccurate numbers over the Christmas holidays and New Year

As the RKI reports, distorted case numbers are to be expected over the holidays. The reason is a lower test and reporting activity: “During the holidays and at the turn of the year, it should be noted when interpreting the number of cases that less testing and reporting activity is to be expected, so that the data shown in the dashboard and management report are only an incomplete picture the epidemiological situation in Germany. “

The case numbers of the RKI can differ from those of the individual federal states. One reason for this is the longer transmission routes between the RKI and the responsible health authorities. The RKI’s Covid-19 dashboard can also be adjusted during the day.
