That Naughty Dog developed a Crash Bandicoot trilogy did not prevent the saga from continuing, yes, in other hands. In 2001 Universal would release Crash Bandicoot 4: The Wrath of Cortex through Vivendi Universal and with Traveller’s Tales in charge of the project.
Definitely, this fourth installment did not cause the same impact as the previous titles . At least not long enough to make the cut for what would be the N. Sane Trilogy. However, that does not mean that there is no room for surprises. Especially when its prototype has recently been rediscovered.
Through his YouTube channel, Jon Burton , who was director of Traveller’s Tales / Tt Games has shared his latest discovery, a prototype of Crash Bandicoot 4: The Wrath of Cortex recorded on a disc. An unfinished version with the odd change from the original.
Beyond not being as polished as the final version , we would find interesting details in this prototype: from the start, the main image in which the game’s logo is shown would go from being shown on a laboratory to offering a starry background.
However, the good thing that from this version you have access to the debug mode is that it is possible to access levels that would end up being somewhat different, as with Crashes to Ashes in which instead of piloting the iconic mechanical suit, you would be at the wheel of a fun jeep.

And, for reference, here is a short gameplay that shows how the final version of the level ended up.
We have seen how Burton has recovered some rarity lately, like that canceled Justice League game for PS2, although the case of Crash Bandicoot 4: The Wrath of Cortex is quite different, entering the pile of titlesnot so iconic del marsupial.
What will be Burton’s next rediscovery? Considering Traveller’s Tales’s long history, it won’t take long to find out.
