Cristiano Ronaldo ‘s second spell at Manchester United is coming to an end. The Portuguese striker has asked the club that if a good offer arrives for him this summer, they accept it and let him out. The decision is motivated by the footballer’s desire to continue playing in the Champions League for another year, a competition for which the Red Devils have not qualified after finishing sixth in the Premier League standings.
After a disappointing season for Old Trafford, at 37 years old Cristiano is looking for new challenges and prolong his streak of consecutive seasons playing in the top European competition. If he stayed at United and did not play in the Champions League , he would cut his streak of 19 consecutive years playing in the competition, since he left Sporting Lisbon for the English team just after coming of age.
Since then he has accumulated 183 games , with a balance of 140 goals and 42 assists, making him the top scorer in the history of the tournament ahead of his ‘archenemy’ Leo Messi (125 goals). In addition, they have been proclaimed European champions five times, four with Real Madrid and one with Manchester United .
The Portuguese is aware that if he remains he will have to play the Europa League. For this reason, according to The Times , Ronaldo has asked to leave United if a satisfactory offer arrives for him. Not even his good season (24 goals and 3 assists in 38 games) has made it possible for the Red Devils to maintain their place in the Champions League, where last year they lost in the round of 16 against Atlético de Madrid.
Roma, the great candidate
Cristiano has supported his team throughout the course with his 18 goals in the Premier League. With the arrival of Erik ten Hag on the bench, it remained to be seen what decision the Portuguese star would take, since the coach had publicly assured that he was counting on him. However, it seems that the striker has other plans, and they go through playing the Champions League .
In that sense, Roma, Bayern and Chelsea are the teams that would be on the lookout to take over the services of the Portuguese international. The Italian team is the great favourite, while the Germans and English are looking for a replacement for Lewandowski and Lukaku. The former still has one more year on his contract but he has asked to leave and Barcelona is the best placed, while the Belgian has returned to Inter Milan. So if a good offer arrives, United fans will say goodbye to Cristiano Ronaldo for the second time in their history.
