Watching a 90-minute scary movie burns 113 calories, that is, the same calories we consume during a half-hour walk. This is revealed by a study carried out by scientists at the University of Westminster (England) in 2012. Researchers measured the energy expenditure of ten people while they watched mythical horror titles. Conclusion: The Shining (1980) is the most effective; viewers burned 184 calories. They are followed by Tiburon (1975), with 161, and The Exorcist (1973), with 158.
All the films analyzed caused episodes of stress or panic which, in turn, increased adrenaline levels. This physiological reaction suppresses the appetite , excites the activity of the basal metabolism – the one that develops the cell to survive – and ultimately triggers energy consumption.
