Fixed connectivity services have become an elementary part of the basic basket of Mexicans as they are essential to continue with school and work activities. At the same time, streaming platforms have gained ground on open television and have become the basis for family training.
Companies like Telmex, Megacable, Izzi and Totalplay know this and that is why they have expanded the range of plans so that consumers have a wider range of options. But what is cheaper for the consumer: hiring a double play package (internet, landline telephony with access to streaming) or a single plan, that is, only internet and the video on demand application separately?
Doble play, ¿caro?
In the double play segment, only the operators Telmex and Totalplay add the streaming platforms Amazon Prime and Netflix to their plans, whose average cost ranges from 509 pesos to 1,769 pesos, depending on the internet speed required.
According to data from the Federal Institute of Telecommunications (IFT), the rates of Telmex’s double play packages, which include Netflix, are the only ones that have had the greatest increases from 2020 to this year. For example, the package of 509 pesos that has a speed of megabytes increased by 2%, since two years ago it cost 499 pesos. While that of 814 pesos, which has a speed of 150 megabytes, rose 5%, since in 2020 it had a price of 777 pesos.
Totalplay has seven double play packages that include Amazon and Netflix. The cheapest plan of this company costs 623 pesos and has 40 megabytes of speed and Amazon Prime. While the most expensive is priced at 1,769 pesos with a speed of 500 megabytes in addition to including the Netflix streaming platform. It should be noted that these plans were incorporated this year into the telecommunications company’s offer.
Cheaper if contracted separately?
Currently, various users choose to contract the internet service and the streaming platform separately, seeking to save. According to data from the telecommunications regulator, internet rates start from 169 pesos to 1,000 pesos. For example, Blue Telecomm, a subsidiary company of Televisa, has internet plans from 169 pesos to 999 pesos, depending on the demand for megabytes that consumers require but without the possibility of adding any streaming.
While Telmex has internet rates from 349 to 399 pesos. In addition, this company is the only one that has the possibility of adding Netflix to the streaming platform in its single mode. The user would pay between 469 pesos and up to 1,086 pesos, depending on the speed of the internet.
But if a consumer only wants to contract internet for 349 pesos and the streaming platform separately, for example a basic Netflix subscription that costs 139 pesos, they would have to spend 488 pesos a month. Or if you want to buy Amazon Prime, whose subscription costs 99 pesos, you will have to pay 448 pesos.
