Does smoking make us age prematurely?

If one of two identical twins smokes and the other does not, which one ages earlier? This is how the approach of an American experiment just published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery could be expressed. Analysis of the plastic surgeon at Case University Hospital (Cleveland) Bahman Guyuron shows that facial aging accelerates up to 5 years in twins who have a long history as smokers compared to their siblings who do not use tobacco . The study is based on 79 sets of twins.

The analyzes also reveal that premature aging of the face in smokers is observed, above all, in the lower two thirds of the face . Crucially, the scientists identified more puffiness under the lower eyelids in smokers, as well as more pronounced nasolabial folds (the lines that join the nose and mouth) , more lip wrinkles, and droopy cheeks.

Feeling alone and unhappy accelerates aging more than tobacco

They conclude that psychological factors, such as feeling unhappy, lonely or desperate, add up to 1.65 years to biological age, more than smoking.
