Good students smoke less , according to a study in which the Carlos III University of Madrid (UC3M) participates and the results of which have been published in the journal Nicotine & Tobacco Research .
María Durbán and her colleagues from the UC3M Department of Statistics have discovered a close relationship between school performance and smoking: the lower the first, the higher the second. Specifically, tobacco use is three or four times more frequent in students with very low performance than in those with better grades.
The researchers do not consider that the ownership of the educational center (public or private) or the educational level of the parents constitute factors that increase the probability of smoking. However, they do highlight the importance of the family environment due to its direct influence on the development of adolescent behaviors. "In this sense, the probability of smoking is higher in those homes where a family member uses tobacco, " the scientists point out.
