Does smoking while drinking alcohol increase the hangover?

If you have the habit of smoking avidly while drinking alcohol, you should know that you are at greater risk of suffering a hangover the next morning, according to a study published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs in its latest issue.

The study, conducted with 113 university students who underwent an exhaustive follow-up for eight weeks, shows that the symptoms of a hangover – headache, nausea, fatigue … – are more frequent if they are accompanied by alcohol consumption a few cigarettes. In fact, after consuming the same dose of alcohol, not only is it more likely to feel bad when we smoke, but also the hangover becomes much more intense .

Although it is not yet clear why it happens, it is not the first time that a link between alcohol and tobacco has been established. Some previous studies suggest that brain receptors for nicotine are involved in our subjective response to alcoholic beverages , and that drinking and smoking simultaneously releases more dopamine, the pleasure hormone.
