Ejaculating often reduces the risk of prostate cancer

Yes. It is not a myth; science supports it.

“Ejaculating at least 21 times a month significantly reduces a man’s risk of developing prostate cancer,” a study funded by the National Cancer Institute and carried out by the Boston University School of Public Health, Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School (USA), and which is collected by the journal European Urology.

The cohort study was carried out with male health professionals – a research that began in 1986 -, aged between 40 and 75 years, whose participants were followed for 18 years; The object of the research was to determine the frequency of ejaculation at different ages and if it was associated with the probability of contracting prostate cancer.

The researchers found that men who ejaculated 21 times a month or more were less likely to get prostate cancer than those who ejaculated 4-7 times a month. This does not prove that ejaculating more often prevents cancer, but rather it is associated with a decreased risk.

The participants completed a questionnaire with a total of 31,925 responses with the frequency of ejaculation in 1992. The frequency of ejaculation per month was recorded in the following categories: none, 1-3, 4-7, 8-12, 13-20 , more than 20 times. The follow-up was completed by 96% of the men who were still living.

For men who developed prostate cancer, medical records were obtained to determine age at diagnosis, prostate-specific antigen level, and tumor stage and grade.

During follow-up, 3,839 cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed . One of the main observations was that the frequency of ejaculation per month decreased with age.

For example, the average of 13 or more ejaculations per month was 57% between 20 and 29 years, but 32% between 40-49 years.

Compared to men who ejaculated four to seven times a month and excluding men with erectile dysfunction, these were the data:

There was a 20% lower risk of prostate cancer for those who ejaculated 21 times or more per month aged 20 to 29 years.

There was an 18% lower risk of prostate cancer for those who ejaculated 21 or more times per month aged 40 to 49 years.

There was a 26% reduction in the risk of prostate cancer in men over the age of 50 who had ejaculated 21 or more times per month.

There was a lower risk of prostate cancer in ages 40-49 for those who ejaculated 13-20 times a month.

There were similar but smaller reductions in risk across all ages for men who ejaculated 13 or more times per month.

There was a 25% lower risk reduction of getting “low risk” prostate cancer for men who ejaculate more than 13 times a month in men ages 20-29.

There was a 28% lower risk of getting “low risk” prostate cancer, for men ages 40-49 who ejaculated more than 13 times a month.

There was a 25% lower risk of getting “low risk” prostate cancer for men in their 50s who ejaculated more than 13 times a month.

There was a 27% lower risk of getting “intermediate risk” prostate cancer between the ages of 20 and 29 for men who ejaculated more than 13 times a month.

Thus, the study showed an association between frequent ejaculation and a lower probability of contracting prostate cancer in three different age groups.

Besides ejaculating frequently, other methods that can help reduce the risk of prostate cancer include: achieving or maintaining a healthy weight and exercising regularly.
