Greater Copenhagen (Capital) Region
Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is one of the oldest capitals in Europe. Despite its age, Copenhagen offers a contemporary and modern lifestyle with a thriving nightlife and excellent shopping. Top tourist attractions include Kronborg Castle, Tivoli Gardens, the Little Mermaid, and the island of Bornholm.
Located in Helsingør, which is about 30 miles from Copenhagen, Kronborg Castle is an architectural marvel from the Renaissance period and was used as a fortress during the period of time. The castle inspired the setting of the English playwright William Shakespeare for his play “Hamlet.” This UNESCO World Heritage site is a must see for lovers of history and architecture.
Established in 1843, Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens are the second oldest amusement park in the world. This popular destination offers a combination of performing arts, rides (including a wooden roller coaster), and many attractions, including a game room and aquarium.
The fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen inspired Edvard Eriksen to build the statue of The Little Mermaid. Made in 1913 in bronze, you can see the Little Mermaid sitting on a rock by the water on the Langelinie promenade. This is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Copenhagen.
Bornholm, an island in the Baltic Sea, offers many tourist attractions ranging from picturesque fishing villages to rocky sea escapes and sandy beaches. Visitors can really enjoy Denmark’s natural beauty at its finest here. Popular villages that reflect this beauty include Rønne and Svaneke.
Zealand
Another popular region of Denmark is Zealand along with its nearby islands of Møn, Falster and Lolland. Other famous places in this region are the GeoCenter Møns Klint (geological museum), the BonBon-Land amusement park and the Knuthenborg Safari Park.
South denmark
Located in southern Denmark, the small island of Funen is best known as the birthplace of the writer Hans Christian Andersen. With its scenic beauty, sandy beaches, and castles, it’s easy to see why Andersen’s hometown inspired him to write fairy tales.
North and South Jutland
The Jutland Peninsula is a region that comprises the entire western half of Denmark. Divided regionally into North Jutland and South Jutland, you’ll find plenty to do here, including visiting Legoland Billund or the old town of Ribe.
Legoland, the world’s first Legoland park, is an interesting theme park consisting of buildings and attractions sometimes made entirely of Legos, which are small plastic toy building pieces. The degree of sophistication with which this unique place has been built is undoubtedly exemplary. This park is located two miles from Billund Airport. This is a must see in Denmark that will delight tourists of all ages.
Built in the early 8th century, Denmark’s oldest city, Ribe, exudes a vintage flair along with a rich cultural heritage. Its Old World charm makes it a must see destination. Popular tourist attractions in Ribe include the Ribe Viking Museum, Ribe Cathedral, and Denmark’s oldest town hall.
