Fecanaco: The price of beer in Mexico could rise due to the struggle in Ukraine

The beer industry is not exempt from the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. According to the Federation of Chambers of Commerce (Fecanaco) of Tamaulipas, the price of ‘cheves’ could rise up to 37% in Mexico, as a result of this struggle, since Ukraine is the second world producer of barley and the fourth importer. of this grain.

In 2020 alone, the Ukrainian country sent abroad 5,046 kilograms of barley, according to the Statista data portal. Only behind France, which exported 6,800 kilograms, and ahead of Australia, which sold 4,258 kilograms in other countries.

Ukraine is also the fifth country in the world in the production of rye and the eighth producer of wheat, and according to the Embassy of Ukraine, Mexico is its second most important trading partner in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The technical secretary of Fecanaco, Christiaan Pérez Cosio, assured that the increase in the price of this drink could occur mainly on the border between Mexico and the United States, since 60% of the beer is imported to borders such as Tamaulipas.

Pérez Cosio also commented that the increase in the price of beer is due to the fact that, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it is estimated that products such as barley, the basic ingredient for brewing, drop.

In addition, he pointed out that barley is not the only cereal that may be scarce due to Russia’s military offensive in Ukraine, since it is expected that rye and wheat will also be lacking, knowing that the Eastern European country is a key producer for Mexico.

Previously, other market analysts warned that the prices of energy products, gas and oil would rise due to the conflict. Also that raw materials for supply chains would be affected, which would directly impact inflation in countries like Mexico.

Today, Ukraine exports metallurgical products, fertilizers, and cereals to the country, while Mexico imports alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, and automobiles into Ukraine.
