Find out how it is made and where the sugar is obtained

An indispensable food for decades and decades in much of the world, sugar has seen its reputation put at stake in recent years, the same period in which countless alternatives have appeared that promise their benefits, but without harm. We reveal how it is made and where it is obtained from.

However, scientific evidence has shown on more than one occasion that sucrose, by itself, is not more fattening than many other foods considered “healthy” and that it should even be incorporated into any balanced diet, always in modest amounts.

Beyond that, and as if to deepen the knowledge we have in this regard, below we will try to elucidate how sugar is made and where it is obtained.

According to most historians, the first mentions made of sugar are about 5,000 years ago , when it has been proven that certain African civilizations already extracted the product of sugar cane. A custom that was displaced over the centuries, to the point of reaching, not long later, also the Arabs and, with them, Europe.

Where is sugar obtained from?

Sugar is obtained, today, both from sugar cane and beet root , the second option being more frequent in the country, due to the prevailing weather conditions.

About the production process, and focusing on the root of the beet, it consists of these steps:

  • Beets are grown between autumn and early winter
  • Once harvested, they are thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt
  • The plant is cut into pieces, called cossettes, to extract sugar
  • The use of a diffuser allows the water to be converted into a sweet solution
  • The pulp is then pressed, and the resulting water is added to that solution.
  • The juice obtained goes through carbonation, achieving a sugar liqueur
  • This syrup is boiled, and when the water evaporates, the sugar crystals remain
  • Ultimately, the crystals are air dried, for storage

As you can see, it is a procedure without significant chemical interventions or anything like that, and that explains why consuming sucrose on a regular basis , without exaggeration, is a practice without major contraindications. On the other hand, incurring a disproportionate intake of sugar is related to obesity, diabetes and even tooth decay.
