Mainz – A fire broke out in a high-rise building in Mainz on Monday morning. An apartment on the 14th floor of the house was already in full fire when the fire brigade arrived, as a police spokesman said on Monday. The emergency services are currently in the process of getting the people out of the building in Mainz-Gonsenheim.

According to the police, more than 100 people are registered in the high-rise. The police were initially unable to provide any information about the injured or the cause of the fire.
As the SWR reports, the emergency services rescue people using an internal fire escape in the house. A video shows how dark clouds of smoke rise into the sky from an apartment.
With the emergency call “Explosion in the skyscraper”, the Mainz fire brigade moved out with all fire engines on Monday morning at around 10.40 am, reports the Allgemeine Zeitung . Numerous volunteers from the fire brigade would also support the operation. One person was rescued from the apartment. The apartments from floors 15 to 18 were affected by the heavy smoke development and were evacuated.
The fire brigade, ambulance service and police are on site with a large number. The area was largely closed to traffic, it said. “Please avoid the area extensively in order not to obstruct the operational measures,” tweeted the Mainz police. The fire in the apartment on the 14th floor has been extinguished according to media reports. Residents of the neighboring houses on Elsa-Brändström-Straße house numbers 55 and 57 can go back to their apartments. (dpa / ml)
