Heavy rain and thunderstorms are particularly troubling for western Germany. At least one person dies, a child has an accident after being struck by lightning. The thunderstorms are not over yet.
Düsseldorf (dpa) – In storms at the start of the weekend, at least one person was killed. According to the police, a 65-year-old worker died on Friday on a tunnel construction site in Stuttgart.
According to initial findings, an underground brook had swelled severely due to heavy rain, the water washed away a framework and tore it over – and several workers with it. While three of them were taken to hospital, the 65-year-old could only be recovered dead.
A twelve-year-old was seriously injured in Düsseldorf. Lightning struck on a street near their group of cyclists on Friday evening. According to the fire department, the girl was probably electrocuted and fell. A car then captured it.
Panne bei Girlgroup
The thunderstorm also had an impact on an RTL live stream in which the No Angels wanted to talk about their future as a girl group. Because of the storm, the program could no longer be broadcast live via the normal cell phone network, as a technician explained on the Cologne broadcaster’s website. The interview was interrupted and later put online.
In view of the weather, there were more than 500 fire brigades in the city. Lightning struck a roof and the roof structure caught fire. There were no injuries. According to the fire brigade, numerous cellars in nearby Hennef were full and slopes slipped.
In many parts of Hesse, the emergency services also had a lot to do until late in the evening. In the Hochtaunus and Wetterau districts, heavy rains flooded streets, and rubble landed on a federal road. According to the police, 15 cellars were full in the central Hessian town of Dautphetal.
In Mainz and the surrounding area, the fire brigades were called to around 100 missions late on Friday evening within two and a half hours. The helpers had to pump empty numerous full basements and underground garages, secure flooded streets and clean up after a landslide, as the fire brigade announced on Saturday.
It looked completely different in the north: there, good weather on Saturday night in Hamburg and Kiel attracted numerous people outside. After residents complained about the noise, emergency services in Kiel cleared the Schrevenpark around 2 a.m., around 350 people had to leave the site. In Hamburg, the police stepped in when there were numerous violations of the Corona regulations on Alma-Wartenberg-Platz. About 400 visitors blocked the street, did not adhere to the distance rules, did not wear a mask and drank alcohol despite the ban, as a police spokesman announced. Nevertheless: Although there was a lot going on in the city, the number of people was not comparable to normal times before the pandemic, said the spokesman.
Further prospects
At the weekend, the thunderstorm focuses slowly shift. On Saturday they are mainly “in a corridor from northwest Germany to eastern Bavaria or western Saxony as well as in the central parts of the country,” said the German Weather Service (DWD) on Saturday. It can also rain heavily, 20 liters per square meter can fall within a short time. In addition, there are regional squalls or hail. Only in the northeast should it be storm-free on the first day of the weekend.
On Sunday there should then be thunderstorms, especially in a strip from Schleswig-Holstein to the Alps. Regionally, there should be strong thunder and lightning, and heavy rain is also expected. And it stays warm: in the east there should be maximum temperatures of 24 to 28 degrees, in the rest of the country from 18 to 24 degrees. The risk of showers is said to be low west of the Rhine.
At the start of the new week it should stay warm, in the middle and in the south of Germany storms can fall again. Only for Wednesday do the meteorologists promise that the weather will calm down.
