If you take a look at the statistics, February definitely lives up to its reputation: In Waldsassen in Bavaria, the temperature fell to -36.3 degrees Celsius on February 10, 1956, an absolute record. Also on February 12, 1929 in Munich, the German Weather Service (DWD), based in Offenbach, registered a frosty -31.6 degrees Celsius. Both years were the coldest since temperature measurements began, with an average temperature of -10 degrees.

But the weather in February in Germany was also shaped by global warming in recent years. In the coldest month of the year, even 20 degrees Celsius are no longer uncommon. A total of around 15 percent of all weather stations reached 20 degrees and more in the course of February.
According to the DWD, February has always been too warm in the past three years: in 2021 the average temperature was +1.8 degrees (+1.4 degrees above the climate mean), in 2020 it was +4.9 degrees (+4.5 degrees) and in 2019 at +4 degrees (+3.6 degrees). The last time it happened was February 2018 that was too cold: The average temperature was -1.9 degrees and for a long time -2.3 degrees below the climate mean.

But what will the weather be like in Germany in February 2022? Does the month follow on from December and January that are too mild, or does the cold whip come after all? In any case, the current forecasts will disappoint many winter fans. Currently there is little to be said for freezing cold and extensive snowfall. In their long-term forecast, the European and American weather services predict February 2022 will be too mild. Accordingly, the temperature should be one to two degrees above the climate mean.
In terms of precipitation, both models assume an average month, in some regions even too dry.
