A few weeks ago we presented you with the latest collector’s item released by Cupra, the De Antonio Yachts D28 Formentor . Since its spin-off from Seat three years ago, the Cupra sports division has created its own language as an automotive firm. In order to do so, it has escaped from conventions and labels, launching models available to everyone and with contained powers for a more coherent public. Cupra has ceased to be the name to become the essence , with a striking and complete porphtolio. So much so that they launch their own yacht: the De Antonio Yachts D28 Formentor. This is a special limited edition D28 in iconic CUPRA colors and finishes, which will go on sale in late 2021 .
The intention of the firm, since its inception, is to create experiences that go beyond the product itself, that represent a lifestyle. Hence, creating your own yacht, with a pure Cupra design, does not sound far-fetched . Even less if we understand that its birth has maritime connotations, as Sangalli, head of Color & Trim Concept & Strategy at Cupra, commented: “We are a Barcelona brand and our link with the sea is very strong ”. Of course, when starting the brand’s path, nothing was so clear, “I never imagined that I would see a Cupra Formentor riding the waves, but the reality is that we have been able to create it”, accepts Sangalli himself.
Inspired by the Formentor VZ5
To shape the yacht created in collaboration with the Antonio Yacht shipyard, the Color & Trim team was clear that they had to be inspired by Cupra’s most anticipated and representative model: the Formentor VZ5. The result is obvious and translates into waves with very evocative colors, materials and shapes, demonstrating the harmony that exists between the passion for the road and the sea .
Choosing a yacht was quite an obvious and easy decision. According to Sangalli: “This type of boat, its dimensions, its design, had all the characteristics to fit and combine with CUPRA as a brand. When you contemplate them together, you perceive the same code, the same feeling ”. All this despite the obvious, and not so obvious, differences between the two worlds.
Cupra yacht design and differences
In order to create a navigable Formentor, the Color & Trim team had to think and resort to new materials in the automotive industry. “We had to take into account some aspects that we do not face when we design a car, such as salt water or the effects of the sun ” they explain. It is logical, and even the interior requires resistant materials, waterproof but equally exquisite and exclusive.
With that goal in mind, Cupra has opted for UV resistant vegan leather, noble woods, carbon fiber and some touches of metallic elements in the purest Formentor style. To make its automotive heritage clear, the De Antonio Yachts D28 Formentor incorporates the Petrol Blue Matt in the hull, in addition to the black chrome combined with the copper (Cooper) tone so characteristic of the brand.
