Travel + Leisure , the world's leading travel publication, has awarded the Galapagos the "Best Island" award. "This award is a recognition of the effort that the Ecuadorian State has invested to preserve the archipelago in the best possible state," said the director of the Galapagos National Park (PNG), Edwin Naula.
The magazine published last Friday the list of the awarded places, chosen by its readers, who for the second consecutive year placed the Ecuadorian archipelago in first place with 90.25 points. "Galapagos was chosen as the 'Best Island in the World' because its characteristics provide encounters with nature and strengthen the spirit of exploration in visitors ," the publication explained.
The archipelago, located about a thousand kilometers from the continental coasts of Ecuador and declared in 1978 as a Natural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), owes its name to the turtles giants that inhabit it. It is considered a natural laboratory , which allowed the British scientist Charles Darwin to develop his theory on the evolution and natural selection of species.
