Glacier National Park Canada – Money Saving Tips

Glacier National Park in Canada should not be confused with the Montana park of the same name. It stands out only as a place of unspoiled landscapes. Take a look at some facts about Glacier and its surroundings.

Nearby cities with cheap rooms

Revelstoke is 72 km. (44 miles) to the east and offers a variety of rooms and restaurants.

Camping and lodging facilities

Inside the park, the only rooms available are at the Glacier Lodge on Rogers Pass. Glacier has three campgrounds within its boundaries: Illecillewaet opens in late June with flush sites and restrooms. Loop Brook and Mt. Sir Donald both open on July 1.

Return permits cost $ 9.80. If you are going to be in the area for more than a week, there is an annual permit available for $ 68.70.

The best free attractions in the park

Glacier is less visited than its eastern neighbors, so much of the attraction here involves experiences in the countryside, such as hiking, fishing, and camping.

Glacier and its western neighbor, Mt. Revelstoke National Park is located in the Columbia Mountains, an area distinct from the Rocky Mountains to the east. Because these mountains are the highest between here and the Pacific coast, there are temperate rain forests and areas with almost permanent snow cover. The trails here tend to attract more experienced hikers and campers. Be sure to ask locally at the beginning of your visit for updated trail and mountain conditions. Natural hazards like avalanches are a reality here.

Parking and Transportation

Highway 1, also known as the Trans Canada Highway, crosses Glacier NP. Near the center of the park, the Rogers Pass Discovery Center is open year-round except December 25 and November. Everything else is closed in winter due to heavy snowfall (depths usually reach seven feet in some places). Note that, unlike its national park neighbors immediately to the east, Glacier is in Pacific time.

Admission fees

Canadian national park entrance fees do not apply to people who simply walk through a park with no intention of stopping. But when you visit viewpoints, hiking trails, and other attractions, adults pay a daily rate of $ 9.80 CAD, seniors $ 8.30, and youth $ 4.90. This adds up quickly, but luckily you can pay a flat fee for a full charge of your car of $ 19.60 per day. The fee can be paid at visitor centers and for your convenience it is best to pay every day at once and display your receipt on the windshield.

These fees also allow you to enter any other Canadian national park during the time of validation. Those who try to avoid paying the fees are subject to heavy penalties, so don’t try.

Nearest major airports

The Rogers Pass Interpretive Center is approximately 340 km away. (208 miles) from Calgary International Airport. There are small commercial airports to the west in Kamloops and Kelowna, British Columbia.

Budget Airlines to buy

WestJet is a budget airline serving Calgary.
