Life changed forever for Romain Grosjean on November 29, 2020 , the day he narrowly escaped death in a terrible and spectacular accident at the start of the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix.
The French pilot was engulfed in a ball of fire caused by the impact against the metal barrier of his Haas, which split in half, and he miraculously escaped with only a few burns. Breathing was held in the entire paddock for almost an hour until it was known that the Frenchman was fine, he even spoke to his family while he was transferred to the nearest hospital where he rested until returning to the circuit to thank all those who They risked their lives to save him.
Grosjean, who had already accumulated 11 seasons in the Great Circus, knew that this had been his end in the highest category of motorsports, and although a future awaited him in IndyCar, Mercedes did not want him to say goodbye in such a sad way. For this reason, through his boss, Toto Wolff , they assured him a test day with one of his champion single-seaters, something that was supposed to take place at the French Grand Prix, in front of his public, but never happened, although Images were published in which the seat was made in the German team’s own black overalls.
Now, months later, the Frenchman has revealed what happened so that this exhibition to say goodbye to Formula 1 has not yet taken place. In a video on his YouTube channel, when asked if he had climbed on the silver arrow Grosjean said: “No, not yet. It’s 100% my fault, because I haven’t been able to give Mercedes dates to be back in Europe, and if someone follows my social media they can see that I’ve moved to the United States, in concrete to Miami”.
“This is my house in Miami, this is my sofa,” he joked as he showed part of his home. “I moved in December 2021, and I’ve been very busy since 2020, even though I was supposed to drive the Mercedes at the French Grand Prix and then do a test day at the Le Castellet circuit at Paul Ricard.
“But due to COVID-19, the date for France was moved, I had a race that same weekend. We wanted to do the test day, but since there was a quarantine between the country and the United Kingdom, it was very complicated for me, so we are looking for a date for September at Silverstone,” said the former Haas driver.
When everything seemed ready for Grosjean to finally enjoy an experience in a world champion single-seater, another misfortune occurred: “However, the circuit was busy, but I have been in contact with Mercedes and with Toto [Wolff] again even with him in Miami at the Formula 1 Grand Prix.”
“He told me yes, that the test day was going to happen, and I have no doubts, because they have been talking to me all the time, but it is my fault for not having time to return to Europe,” revealed the Frenchman. “I’m really excited to do it, because it should be with the 2019 Mercedes or the 2020 Mercedes, which are two of the fastest ever made, so it’s very exciting.
