Hail contains anticancer bacteria

Who would have thought that rainwater, hail and snow could be a natural source of bacteria to make medicine ! In the Department of Functional Biology of the University of Oviedo they have managed to isolate and cultivate a group of actinobacteria, specifically the genus Streptomyces , which has pharmacological potential.

The professor of Microbiology Gloria Blanco, who is part of the multidisciplinary team that investigates these microorganisms, highlights that nature is the main source of antibiotics and antitumors. The scientific interest lies in finding new active principles in unexplored habitats that replace antibiotics that, due to their use, are generating serious resistance.

Blanco's group had already identified bacteria with therapeutic capacity in algae and coral ecosystems of the Cantabrian Sea, more than 4,000 meters deep.
