Snow in Mallorca? A hailstorm has turned the holiday island into a winter paradise. There are also severe weather warnings for the coming days.
Palma – An unusual weather spectacle has occurred on the holiday island of Mallorca. A hailstorm turned the island into a white winter landscape on Friday (November 5th, 2021).
Where else holidaymakers enjoy the sun, suddenly a centimeter-thick layer of white lay. The reason was a bad weather front that moved across the east of the island. While it was still sunny in the capital Palma de Mallorca on Thursday, it hailed and rained in the east of the island, especially in Cala Ratjada and Son Servera, reports the Mallorca newspaper.

In Cala Ratjada and Son Serva it was hailing so badly that a layer up to thirty centimeters thick formed in places. However, the white splendor did not last long, heavy rain and temperatures around 14 degrees let the piled hail masses melt away quickly, reports the Mallorca Zeitung. At the Capdepera lighthouse, 20 liters of water per square meter were measured within ten minutes.
Severe weather in Mallorca: warnings of heavy rain, hail and storm
Storms are also forecast for the coming days. Until next week there should be heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail and storms in Mallorca, according to the Mallorca newspaper. For the holiday island there were even warnings of a so-called Medicane, a storm low similar to a hurricane in the tropics, only in the Mediterranean. According to experts, the storms over the Mediterranean have become more frequent and violent due to climate change.
“In addition to sometimes violent thunderstorms with heavy rain and local flooding, the weather computers show that the wind will also intensify. There is a threat of gusts of wind, maybe even hurricanes, ”says RTL meteorologist Martin Pscherer to wetter.de. Some of the forecasts even show gusts of over 140 km / h. It will probably be a while before the weather on Mallorca becomes more summery again. Only from Wednesday (November 10th, 2021) the temperatures could rise again to 20 degrees. In Germany it is likely to stay cold, Tief Nael brings fresh snow and frost. (Sarah Neumeyer with dpa)
