That the Harry Potter saga goes from the most childish of its first installment to a more adult film version is something we all know. Now, from there to classifying it as a film for over 18 or type R rating there is a big jump. But beyond the anecdote, this condition occurs in the form of a law that has been passed in Hungary. Viktor Orbán, prime minister of the country and member of the Fidesz-Hungarian Civic Union party, presented a law that has come out, recently approved in parliament. After approval, Harry Potter is a 18+ movie in Hungary.
The new rule has been seen by LGTBQ + groups and by Amnesty International as a violation of children’s rights and freedom of expression . Without being anything new, since Orbán reached the presidency he has not stopped legislating on several restrictive laws for the homosexual community. With this last law, in addition to prohibiting all verbal manifestations about homosexuality in schools or in advertising, all those films or series that promote both homosexuality and some type of sexual deviation will become part of the categorization for those over 18 years of age. . And it is that the president of Fidesz, László Köver already expressed a stark comparison between homosexual couples who are going to adopt with pedophilia.
The text of the law collected by France 24H reads as follows: “Any content that represents sexuality as a purpose in itself or promotes the deviation of gender identity (…) or homosexuality may be available to minors under 18 years”. In theory, this law has been created to protect children from pedophilia in Hungary, as the party chaired by Köver maintains a clear position on the relationship between child abuse and homosexuality. Apart from the reality that Harry Potter is a +18 film in Hungary, other successful international productions will be affected by the new law, such as the Friends series or the Billy Elliot film. The future of the premieres in Hungary will be delimited by the decisions of the large productions , since many may ignore the country to release their products in the form of protest.
