Hong Kong is preserved in a wetland park

Hong Kong Wetland Park is one of the best nature reserves in the world. Its marshes and mangroves support an incredible diversity of life, from geckos and pygmy frogs to goldfish and fiddler crabs, while tens of thousands of migratory birds call the area home each year. For most visitors, it is a completely unexpected side of a city most famous for its skyscrapers and shops.

Welcome to the marshes of Mai Po

The park is located on more than 60 hectares in the New Territories in the exclusive Mai Po Marshes. It is an area of incredible biodiversity, from crabs and sausages to dancing dragonflies and a mosaic of butterflies. However, the park is most famous for its birds and wild birds. This is one of the most important places in the world for migratory birds, with thousands of people using the Hong Kong Wetlands Park as a break stopping on the way north or south. These include the Schatian Stonechat, Marsh Sandpiper, and Great Cormorant, with the latter particularly fond of stretching its massive wings for sunbathing.

To do?

Ok, there are a lot of animals, but what do I really do in the park? Well, you won’t need a tent and a machete. The beauty of Hong Kong Wetlands Park is the dedicated trails carved through the park to help visitors explore.

The different walks are designed to take you through different habitats inhabited by different creatures and plants. For example, the creek walk takes you through the flats, where you can see river otters, kingfishers, and other birds, while the Mangrove boardwalk runs through the park’s lush mangrove vegetation. It may not feature the impressive animals at the Hong Kong Zoo or the spectacular creatures at Ocean Park, the attraction here is seeing the animals in their natural habitat.

How long you spend in the park is really up to you, but for blockbusters, the hideouts and birdwatching hikes are budgeted for around 2-3 hours of actual walking.

In addition to the wetlands themselves, there is also a very decent visitor center, offering interactive themed exhibits. While static exhibits are no match for the true outside business, they are a good introduction to where you are and the Swamp Adventure play area is always popular with kids.

Best time to visit

It depends on what you want to see. The park truly is a year-round wildlife haven, but there are some seasonal highlights. The best bird watching is during the annual migrations, mainly in October and November and then again in March and April. During the summer you will find the park illuminated with butterflies.

It may also be worth checking when the tide will go out, as birds and crabs are generally easier to spot in mudflats.

How to get there

Hong Kong Wetland Park is located in the northeast corner of Hong Kong, near the city of Yuen Long. There are a couple of options for visiting the park by bus or train.

  • By bus; Bus 967 from Admiralty Station and Minibus 269B from Hung Hom Station are the most useful bus routes to the park. Travel time is 40 minutes to an hour.
  • By train ; The train route is faster but potentially more complicated. You must take the MTR to Tin Shui Wai station and change for light rail lines 705/706 for Wetland Park station. Octopus cards are valid on light rail.

There is only limited parking in the park, so travel by public transport is recommended.

What to wear

Yes, they are a problem. With a vast expanse of untouched water, the Hong Kong Wetland Park is like a love hotel for mosquitoes. You should definitely wear long sleeves and pants, even in hot weather, and avoid sandals. It is also advisable to apply some type of mosquito repellent. The mosquito population is most active in the days after heavy rains.
