The doubts that we normally have regarding fertilization or pregnancies are really great and many throughout our lives . Sperm are a fundamental part of this act and we must be clear about the function they perform for the possible fertilization that results in a subsequent pregnancy.
What is a sperm?
It was the French scientist Anton Van Leeuwenhoek who first identified what a sperm cell was. It did so thanks to the invention of the first microscopes made with the superimposition of polished glass that made the forms of bacteria much clearer and closer.
The sperm is the male reproductive cell for fertilization of the ovum. These are found in what we know as semen that appear in each man’s ejaculation.
Semen for its part is made up of proteins, sperm, fructose, citric acid and favines. It is usually whitish in color, sometimes yellowish, and occurs in up to 80% in the seminal vesicles and up to 13 and 33% in the prostate.
How many sperm are in an ejaculation?
It must be taken into account that in an ejaculation, the man produces, on average, between 1 and 5 ml of semen . Within that ejaculation with semen, only 5-10% will be made up of sperm, so it seems like a really small amount.
But the reality is that if a man of childbearing age is healthy, he will produce about 250 million sperm and about 525 million of these during his entire childbearing age until he stops producing them.
If we think of an ejaculation and the egg is perfectly formed, we have to think that only one of those 250 million sperm will be the one that fertilizes the egg , and taking into account that this egg is only alive for 24 hours. For its part, the sperm generated can last for 3 to 5 days.
Which ones are the best?
According to scientific studies that have been carried out on the human body and reproductive systems, experts say that the first sperm are the most valid, as detailed in a study in the journal Systems Biology in Reproductive Medicine.
In the first phase of ejaculation, the first ones are the strongest, fastest, those that contain a better DNA and are the most agile . On the other hand, during their way to fertilization they pass through different areas that can kill them, therefore, only the strongest and fastest will reach the end.
Once the sperm reaches the egg and manages to fertilize it, it will travel through the fallopian tube to the uterus and a possible gestation phase will begin.
