How to buy one of the houses for 1 euro that are sold in Italy?

It does not only happen in Spain. The emptied Italy is also a reality. Since the pandemic began, and a few years before, Italy put into operation a more recurrent form of purchase for many inhabitants: a house for 1 euro in Italy.

Since this project began, more than 50 Italian municipalities have already offered houses for a single euro to any inhabitant who wants to live in their villages and meet the requirements they ask for. The objective is that the new owners buy the house with maximum advantages and that they can reform it in the following years.

For every taste

The mayor of one of the towns immersed in this Italian plan for the sale of houses for one euro in Italy, Alberto Preioni , mayor of Borgomezzavalle, commented in 2019 that it was a unique initiative in the world and that it tried to revitalize these small Italian towns who were experiencing depopulation. “It was a good decision because since we decided to sell houses for one euro we have managed to get many people to know us and see that it is a quiet place, with an impressive nature and in which we also have everything, restaurants, pharmacies, schools, public transport ».

That year, the mayor explained that they sold up to 10 houses in a year, with neighbors who are now part of the town’s society.

There are houses for all tastes and for all neighbors: with terraces, roofs, penthouses, houses with pools, everything, the only thing that most of them need a good reform.

Requirements to buy a house for 1 euro in Italy

To qualify for one of the houses that are offered for 1 euro, we only have to contact one of the municipalities or go directly to the official website of this initiative: Case for 1 Euro.

The first thing the authorities ask is to show a real interest to buy and live in the municipality. Later, the authorities impose a series of causes to stay to live there:

  • The authorities request that the new tenants live in the town for a minimum of years. The normal thing is that it includes between 3 and 5 years.
  • The new owners will have to process the residence.
  • They must demonstrate financial solvency and make a deposit of between 2,500 and 5,000 euros when moving.
  • Take out annual insurance in the municipality.
  • Finally, to have access to the one-euro houses in Italy, the new owners will have to participate in the cultural and social activities of the town, get involved in social changes, and not just economically.
