Hyundai and the metaverse: the future of virtual reality

A few months ago Mark Zuckerberg revealed his definitive plan to bring Facebook to life, he called it the metaverse. It was then that the whole world caught on to a previously seen phenomenon, and that is that the (virtual) double life is nothing new. We have seen it in movies, video games and science fiction books, and even some attempt by companies that failed to make us forget reality . However, it seems that Zuckerberg does have the relevance and credibility to carry out his project of an alternate universe. Beyond the dangers, fears and frustrations that this declaration entails, and the confidence on the part of multinational companies in its commercial success, it is important to be aware that a virtual world is drawing near. The Korean offices of the Hyundai Motor company have had to think about the same thing, which has presented its vision of the future at CES 2022 in Las Vegas (Nevada, United States ) held from January 5 to 7. This roadmap contemplates the introduction of synergies between robotics and virtual reality under the slogan “Expanding Human Reach” , which translated would mean: Expand the Human Reach.

It is true that the pandemic and the confinements derived from it have elevated the virtual world , making it almost essential for the vast majority. There are many young people who invest their parents’ money, or their own, in games that create a parallel universe for which they need to buy weapons, outfits, houses and endless elements for the avatars . They are real actions that have their repercussion in the virtual. The metaverse is the next step, and we all need to be vigilant. Companies like Nike have made the leap, producing their own metaverse on the Roblox gaming platform , followed by Adidas with their Coinbase cryptocurrency alliance.

The Metaverse and the Automotive

The automotive sector is no stranger to this virtual universe. The four-wheel industry has not been slow to gain a foothold, starting with the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing ( NASCAR ) with its first digital collection of NFTs . Nissan has gone further, developing avatars that are compatible with its cars in order to stay connected to the metaverse with other users . In all this maelstrom of parallel worlds we find the proposals of H yundai Motor, which will promote a change in its robotics division to overcome the limits of traditional means of transport.

The translation to today’s world is Hyundai Motor teaming up with Boston Dynamics and Microsoft to develop the ideas of “Metamobility” and the “Mobility of Things” . It is not so much the virtual universe itself as the application, through robotics, of solutions that improve mobility in the real world thanks to virtual connectivity. This project has been called “Expanding Human Reach” .

Robots are the essential entities in this vision of the future of Hyundai Motor, so during the CES they presented their range of products. The firm showed the operation of four models that, for 20 minutes, carried out activities such as dancing (Spot) or pure and simple mobility of the Plug & Drive (PnD) and Drive & Lift (DnL) modular applications .
