"I won't do it again", the testimony of a DiDi driver who accepted a trip to AIFA

The notification of a new trip rang on the phone of Nelson, a driver who works for the DiDi transportation app. The destination was the new Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA). He decided to accept the 8 kilometer route, partly because it was close to the area, partly because he was curious about the new airport. But then he did not imagine all the difficulties he would have to get to and from the place. It took him about three hours, he traveled about 35 kilometers, between the way and the return, and he only earned 85 pesos.

The problem, he says, is that when there were still about four kilometers left to finish the trip, the phone lost a signal, the application closed and the trip ended abruptly. After dropping off the passenger, the driver tried restarting the app to see if he could accept another ride nearby. But he couldn’t restore the signal. Because of that, he couldn’t use a browser to get out of there either. He looked around and saw no one. “It looked like a ghost town,” he says.

It was almost 7:00 pm, so he decided to hit the road before it started to get dark. After taking a detour to Zumpango, State of Mexico, and walking several more kilometers, Nelson managed to return home. “I felt sorry for having accepted that trip.”
