In 2050 there will be more plastics than fish in the seas, according to a report published in 2016. Its authors, members of the World Economic Forum (WEF), warned that a third of all the plastic produced ends up mainly in the marine environment , the equivalent of eight million tons a year or, in other words, the contents of a full garbage truck dumped every minute.
Twenty times more plastic is produced today than fifty years ago, and if it continues at the current rate, in 2050 it will be made three times more than in 2014. The study indicated that the number of fish will decrease in the oceans as they are invaded by these huge amounts of plastic.

The problem of plastic pollution is a serious threat to the health of terrestrial and marine ecosystems and it is necessary to start regulating their production and consumption, especially that of single-use plastics.
