Recent images obtained by NASA's LRO lunar orbiter have revealed the existence of 14 lobe scarps or thrust faults (elevations with small inclination angle) in the highlands of the Moon.
As a group of scientists has published in Science , these geological formations originated from faults in the lunar soil produced less than a billion years ago, when the interior of the Moon, previously molten, began to cool. This caused the lunar surface to contract and shrink. According to the calculations of Thomas Watters, of the National Air and Space Museum and lead author of the study, our satellite would have shrunk about 100 meters in recent times .
