In 2008 the Peruvian textile industry announced that it had found a new use for seaweed : to use it to make garments that prevent skin cancer . Products made from seaweed and marketed under the brand name "Healthy Shadow" claim to protect against excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays, which can cause from sunstroke to melanoma (the most serious form of skin cancer), as well as serious vision problems.
These are caps, vests, fanny packs, tops, underwear and bikinis that have been made with Gigartina Chamissoi fibers, an algae that blocks 99.7% of ultraviolet rays. Its properties remain practically intact even after 20 washes.
