Juan Palau: two passions and a single project

The singer, who dabbles in acting, plays Drama Key in “La reina del flow 2”, an artist who revolutionizes history in the second season of the series.

Juan Palau arrives at the performance. How did you get into “La reina del flow”?

The queen of flow comes into my life thank God. At first I did the casting to play the role of Juancho, but I didn’t stay. From there I devoted all my energy to my musical project, but one day I was in an interview and my manager tells me that they are looking for talent to be part of the series and that if I measured it … I thought about it and then I said: “Done. . Of one ”. I presented the test in which I sang a song of mine and a rap by Daddy Yankee and after two weeks they called me to tell me that he had stayed and that they were going to start recording. I couldn’t believe it, it was exciting and this has started to change my life little by little.

How was singing playing a character?

Keep the essence of my voice and my color, because it is reggaeton, the urban genre is my essence. But composing for the character based on a story of his experiences has been an interesting challenge. It is not composing for me, but for Drama Key. The songs are incredible and the verses I wrote are brutal.

Was acting always part of your projects?

I studied Performing Arts. I made my career and dedicated myself to doing theater for a while with the theater company. I was with the Ibero-American Theater Festival and in that process I returned to music. It was something that I expected to happen at some point, only that I was focused on music at that time and life was putting this character on the path and it has been a blessing to be able to mix two passions in a single project.

Who is Drama Key and how will it develop throughout the series?

He is a character that people did not expect, that they believed that he was only going to be Charly’s companion in the cell and that he would not happen from there, then he leaves there and begins to have an impressive physical transformation. They are practically two different people: one, the one who is in jail, and the other, the one who comes out of prison. It will become the nail and dirt of Charly, his right hand and will immerse himself in the world of music. He is a character that will also bring love peaks, breakups, disappointments … he goes through a thousand moments.

How was the preparation of the character?

He is a character that was also built on the fly, thank God, I am fortunate to have a wonderful team that has guided me. We are very supportive and we all support each other a lot to polish our interpretations. I had references, I was very inspired by documentaries or series about what life is like in prison or what a person is like after leaving. It was a challenge when recording, because as it is not done chronologically, one day we could suddenly be recording outside of jail and the next day I was in prison again; then, he had to change the chip. The one outside was very explosive, he liked to solve everything by force. When he comes out he becomes more aware that he is in a musical world where he cannot behave like this.

Do you think he has something of the character or that Drama Key has something of his?

We have both started from the bottom to achieve our dreams, obviously in different scenarios. I mean that what we have achieved has been thanks to our work, drive and tenacity. We are very dreamers and we go out of our way for our passion, without going over anyone.

What stood out to you the most about the character when you read the scripts?

For me, Drama Key is a very special character, he sends a message to young people, because, despite his lack of financial resources, he teaches you that if you want it, you will achieve it. Although he is released from prison, he has all the potential to conquer the world, enter a record label and make good music.

What was the hardest thing about playing Drama Key?

Really difficult scenes to record: one where a fight broke out in prison and the first fist I fell. In fact, they have mocked the networks saying: “What a brave escort Charly got himself”, but it was very hard and we almost did not succeed, it took us a long time. I don’t know stage combat. I asked the director to understand me. They helped me how to fall, how not to hurt us. There are other scenes, that have not come out, that cost me a lot.

Do you have any anecdotes during the recordings that you want to share?

The production provided transportation for all of them and we had to arrive with the mask every day to wash our hands. When we were acting we couldn’t have masks. There would come a time when we always asked for alcohol, because we felt very exposed. They would not let us share the dressing room because of the COVID-19 and we said: “As if we are recording glued”; Later we understood and everything became very normal.
