Make your own chocolate bar at Ritter Sport Best souvenir: Ritter Sport personalized chocolate bars

Ritter Sport is one of the most popular chocolate brands in Germany, based in the town of Waldenbuch, just outside the city of Stuttgart. While its popular bars can be found in any grocery store, a visit to one of its workshops and museums offers a Schokolade lover’s dream – the chance to design their own custom chocolate bar!

Make your own chocolate bar

On my parents’ last visit to Berlin, we decided to try being Willy Wonka. Ritter’s motto from » Quadratisch. Praktisch. Gut “(” Square. Convenient. Good “) is completely German, but visitors can go a bit crazy with add-ons of red pepper, gold stars, and even seasonal specials like Lebkuchen (gingerbread).

We walked into the busy two-story shop, museum, and cafe right off the Gendarmenmarkt and joined the long line of customers waiting to make their own chocolate. Each bar costs € 3.90 and comes with a selection of light or dark chocolate plus 3 add-ons. Even if there is a long line, it moves quickly as people make their card selection and approach chocolate heaven. We only had a moment to reflect on our choices before we got up and I hastily decided on dark chocolate, raspberry, yogurt chunks, and coconut.

There was a 40 minute wait to pick up the chocolates, but a full shop, a small free museum with a short film (English and German) on the history of chocolate, and the baths allowed us a moment of rest from our busy day of sightseeing. Sitting by the window in the upstairs cafe, we had chocolate coffee drinks that came with a little side of chocolate. Diabetics beware …

Of all our selections, the adventurous Milk Chocolate, Chili Powder, Red Pepper, and Caramelized Almond bar was the least successful, but still edible. The rest was a resounding success and was quickly consumed. If you’d rather stick with the tried and true flavors, leave it up to the pros (pros) at Ritter Sport with recommended pairings and pre-made bars.
