A contraceptive vaccine for men could be as effective as the female pill, concludes a new study in China published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism . The new alternative for birth control is the injection of testosterone , which temporarily blocks sperm production. The drug produces very few side effects and the male reproductive cell count returns to normal six months after stopping treatment.
The effectiveness of the injectable male contraceptive has been demonstrated in clinical trials with 1,045 fertile men between the ages of 25 and 40, of whom only one in 100 participants conceived a child in the two and a half years that the trial lasted.
