Manufacturing industry production increased 20.7% in March 2021

For the first quarter of this year, in the national total, the real production of the manufacturing industry increased 6.2%, and real sales increased 6.5% compared to the same period of 2020.

According to the Monthly Manufacturing Survey with a Territorial Approach (Emmet), carried out by the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE), the real production of the manufacturing industry increased 20.7% and real sales 21.1% in March 2021 compared to the same period in 2020. However, the employed personnel decreased 2.4%.

With a variation of 34.5%, the manufacture of beverages was the industrial activity with the greatest positive contribution (3.5 pp). For its part, the production of sugar and panela registered a negative variation of 32%.

With respect to employed personnel, clothing manufacturing presented a variation of -6.1%, and was the domain that contributed the most negatively (-0.6 pp) to the March 2021 figure, which was – 2.4% compared to the same month of 2020.

Beverage production registered a 9% variation in the first three months of 2021 in real production, compared to the first quarter of 2020 and was the domain with the highest positive contribution (1.0 pp). For its part, with -11%, the production of sugar and panela was the industrial activity with the greatest negative contribution (-0.3 pp) to the variation so far this year.

Between April 2020 and March 2021, compared to the period April 2019 and March 2020, the real production of the manufacturing industry presented a variation of -6.4%, the real sales of -6.4% and the personnel -6.4% occupied.

By department, Antioquia presented the highest positive contribution to the result of production and real sales in March compared to the same month of 2020. Regarding employed personnel, Bogotá obtained the highest negative contribution (-1.6 pp) to the annual result (- 2.4%), with a variation of -6.9%.

Regarding cities, Bogotá registered in March the highest positive contribution to the total annual result of production and real sales. For its part, in real sales, Cali had the greatest negative contribution to this result in March 2021, with a variation of -2.5% and a contribution of -0.1 pp

Commerce

For March of this year, according to the Monthly Trade Survey (EMC), retail and vehicle trade had a variation of 20.1% in their real sales compared to the same month of 2020. When excluding sales of fuels and vehicles, this annual variation was 9.7%. Thus, “the variation in real sales for the first three months of 2021 was 4.7% with respect to the same period in 2020. Said variation without the sale of fuels or vehicles was 2.6%,” said the DANE.
