Maternity and paternity leave could be six months from 2022 and will accumulate if it is a single parent family

Today, paternity and maternity leave last 16 weeks, a time that is still short and that various organizations have been asking to extend for a long time. Well, it seems that progress could be made along the way, because today the Minister of Social Rights and the 2030 agenda, Ione Belarra, has announced in an interview on RTVE that the future Family Diversity Law , which is expected to come into force next year, will include the increase in paternity and maternity leave to six months.

In addition, in the case of single-parent families, the two permits can be accumulated , so that you can take care of the baby throughout its first year of life. But there is more news for parents, such as the creation of a universal parenting benefit.

Cumulative leave for single-parent families

As explained by the minister, in coordination with the Ministry of Equality, the new measures seek to improve the conditions of families who have a newborn, because “it is enormously complicated for many families to reconcile parenting with work.”

  • Universal parenting benefit that can reach all families and depends on factors other than the parent’s contribution.

  • Extend paternity and maternity leave to six months.

  • Possibility of adding both permits in case of a single parent family.

  • Create a public network of nursery schools , “to guarantee the right to education in the period from zero to three years.”

  • De facto couples who have children will be able to access the title of large family without having to be married, which implies a recognition of family diversity, because “all families are not only legitimate but are equal in rights”. The current Law 40/2003, of November 18, on the Protection of Large Families, only recognizes the benefits of large families to children and the father or mother, but not to both parents if there is no conjugal bond.

  • Families with a single parent and two dependent minors will have the recognition of a large family. Today, to have this recognition, parents must have at least three children.

According to Ione Belarra, his ministry has an economic proposal to finance this benefit that “has to be a central part of the general state budgets for 2022”.

The FOMO effect (Fear Of Missing Out) is defined as "the fear of missing something". And although it is a concept that has become relevant in recent years, it is nothing new. In the late 1990s, Dr. Dan Herman coined this term.

We live surrounded by technology and it is inevitable that this will be incorporated as one more tool in parenting. In addition to apps that help with things ranging from designing your baby's room to managing the calendar of children with separated parents, devices such as tablets, mobile phones or smart speakers are here to stay. Proof of this is the growing use of Alexa as a timer that children obey without question (or at least without protesting as much as their mother).
