Mercado Libre and its commitment to sustainability grow in parallel

In Mercado Libre they associate sustainability with innovation and efficiency within their operations, because by innovating they generate less negative impact and make increasingly efficient use of the resources they have.

How to respect and take care of the environment?

Mercado Libre sees sustainability as a path of continuous improvement that they have decided to follow. They work with suppliers and strategic partners to make the digital economy as sustainable as possible.

The multinational considers that sustainable development occurs when efforts are coordinated between the different actors and also when companies become economically, environmentally and socially involved in the communities in which they operate. There are three key pillars on which Mercado Libre supports its sustainability strategy:

  • Community. Generate a transformative impact, like the social actors that are at the regional level.
  • entrepreneurial ecosystem. They promote inclusion by betting on technology, innovation and entrepreneurship.
  • Ambient. They take on the challenge of growing respecting the environment.

Mercado Libre promotes the Regenera America program

As part of the measures that the leading e-commerce company in Latin America has adopted to manage the environmental impacts of its operations, there is investment in initiatives for the conservation and regeneration of Latin biomes. Hence, they have the “Regenera América” program, which will reach an investment of 18 million dollars at the end of 2022 at the regional level. Llanos de Apan, a region located in the state of Hidalgo, is the first project of the program in Mexico, with an initial investment of 2.7 million dollars.

According to Pedro Arnt, Mercado Libre’s Chief Financial Officer, the rapid and constant growth of this technology company —a leader in electronic commerce— has increased its responsibility and the challenges regarding the impacts of its operations. For this reason, they have implemented measures to reinforce their commitment to generate a positive socio-environmental impact in the regions where they operate.

“Measure and report our carbon footprint; use renewable energy sources in our Storage Centers and offices; expand our fleet of electric cars; implement material circularity management processes; and support projects with environmental and social impact that we finance from the income obtained with the sustainable bond of 400 million dollars announced in 2020”, are the measures that the company is taking, indicated Arnt.

The program finances projects that have a combined impact between the protection of biodiversity, carbon sequestration and other ecosystem services. It focuses on biomes for their fundamental role in the well-being of people and the planet, as they help mitigate climate change by capturing and storing the carbon emitted into the atmosphere.

Mercado Libre’s strategic partners for the implementation of the program are: Pachama, a technology company focused on restoring nature to solve climate change, which in turn links its efforts with the Toroto organization —a leader in the environmental sector in Mexico that develops ecosystem restoration and conservation projects to capture carbon—.
