A missing person case, which kept the whole of Australia in suspense for weeks, is happily resolved: Police officers discover four-year-old Cleo in a locked house.
Perth – Even seasoned investigators came to tears of emotion: Almost two and a half weeks after she disappeared from the tent on a camping holiday with her family in Australia’s outback, little Cleo is reunited with her parents: the police discovered the four-year-old at night Wednesday in a locked house not far from the campsite. She was alone but well. A 36-year-old was arrested.
Police officer Cameron Blaine, one of the four rescuers, reported that they found the little girl during the raid in the coastal town of Carnarvon around 1 a.m. (Tuesday, 6 p.m. CET). “One of the boys jumped up and picked her up,” he continued. He had to ask her name three times, then the redeeming answer came: “My name is Cleo.”

Cleo missing in Australia: Hundreds of police officers are looking for girls
A little later, the relieved parents were able to hug the little one in the hospital. With their happy rescue, a kidnapping case ended that kept the whole of Australia in suspense for days. Cleo Smith disappeared from her family tent on October 16 at a remote campsite in Western Australia – her mother Ellie described waking up around 6 a.m. with the zippered entrance to the tent open and her eldest daughter missing.
The mother’s desperate pleading for help sparked a wave of sympathy. Hundreds of police officers searched for the little girl from the air, on the water and on the ground, and countless volunteers combed the nearby bushland for possible clues. In the end, the authorities offered a reward of one million Australian dollars (over 640,000 euros) for clues about Cleo’s whereabouts. Concern for the fate of the little ones grew.

Missing Cleo: “Our family is complete again”
The effort has paid off: “Our family is complete again,” wrote Cleo’s mother on Instagram on Wednesday. Police reported that even “veteran investigators wept with relief”. She later published a photo of the beaming girl in a hospital bed, a water ice in one hand and waving happily with the other. Cleo is in a good mood and hopes around “like a battery-powered hopping bunny,” the police said.
The person arrested is a local man. As it was said, the 36-year-old cooperates with the investigators. The police assume an unplanned and spontaneous kidnapping of the girl. The man is therefore not listed as a sex offender and only became a “person of interest” for the investigators the day before.

Missing Cleo is back: festive mood in Australia
There was a festive mood in Carnarvon on Wednesday. The otherwise less busy streets of the town with its 4500 inhabitants were adorned with pink balloons and signs with the words “Welcome back”. “Everyone will celebrate today extensively,” said resident Julee Nelson of the AFP news agency.
The Prime Minister of Western Australia, Mark McGowan, expressed relief about the positive outcome of the case. Embarrassed, he admitted that he had missed the first call that night with the news of Cleo’s liberation. But a few hours later he was already happy about the photo of the little ones in the hospital.
McGowan said that no one could foresee the outcome of such dramas: “You hope for the best, but you are prepared for the worst.” for a movie. Then he added, “It’s just wonderful to bring good news to the country.”
Another missing person case, however, ended tragically: In the United States, the 22-year-old blogger Gabby Petito was found dead. (AFP)
