Fabio Quartararo has achieved pole position in the Moto GP Grand Prix of Catalonia . The Frenchman was the fastest on the grid once again, achieving the fifth consecutive pole this season, something that no one has achieved since Marc Márquez did it in 2014. Following the intractable Frenchman, Jack Miller and Johann Zarco set the best times. Spaniards Maverick Viñales , Aleix Espargaró, Joan Mir, Pol Espargaró and Márquez were 6th, 7th, 10th, 12th and 13th respectively.
The first sensations of the weekend in Catalonia left Franco Morbidelli’s Yamaha as the fastest of the week. He led and set the best times in the first three free practice sessions. It was in the fourth, the one before Q1 , when Fabio Quartararo (1: 39.602) was seen with the best time giving a warning to the rest. Along with them, Oliveira, Bagnaia, Aleix Espargaró, Binder, Zarco, Maverick Viñales, Joan Mir and Valentino Rossi went straight to Q2 .
In Q1, two Spaniards with options were at stake, both Pol Espargaró and Marc Márquez . Despite this, the best times were initially set by Nakagami (1: 39.346) and Jack Miller (1: 39.553), the last lap was the key that dynamited and decided the last two places. Miller set the best time and his slipstream was placed by a Marc Márquez who was struggling to sneak into Q2 . Cervera is not yet in his best physical condition and it shows. His teammate Pol was also behind the Honda, who did know how to take advantage of the last lap. Miller scored a last lap of 1: 39.153 and Espargaró right behind him with 1: 39.170, leaving Marquez at the gates.
Fabio Quartararo was practically intractable at all times in Q2. The Frenchman was an impossible arrow to catch for the rest of his teammates in the last lap of Q2. It remained to be seen if Jack Miller could have competed for pole position if he had not had a nasty crash that forced him to finish in the pit. Before falling, he signed a great time of 1: 38.890 that everyone had to face.
Quartararo finished with a time of 1: 38.853, achieving his fifth pole of the consecutive season, something that had not been achieved since 2014 when Marc Márquez did . The first line of the grid was completed by Johann Zarco above 1:38 (1: 39.049). Miguel Oliveira was fourth, Morbidelli fifth and the Spanish Maverick Viñales closed the second row with his sixth position. Aleix Espargaró was seventh, Binder eighth and Bagnaia ninth. The fourth row went to Joan Mir (10th), Valentino Rossi (11th) and Pol Espargaró (12th). Marc Márquez , at the gates of Q2, will start thirteenth.
