My experience with the HoloLens 2: 'now I can see it clearly'

What is this about mixed reality? Well, it is neither virtual reality nor augmented reality. It is a mix between the two or, to define it more clearly, augmented reality but with an immersive experience since what I am seeing is the real world. And this is the basis of the HoloLens 2, evolution of the first version but with renewed technology that I have had the opportunity to test in a real environment.

If with the first version you had to make certain gestures with your fingers to click, or point with your face, -really uncomfortable- now with the HoloLens 2 the gestures are completely natural, which gives rise to being able to interact with objects , take them by hand, release them, rotate them, …

HoloLens 2 does not require any connection. It is an autonomous device, which connects via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, but in most solutions connectivity to the cloud is not necessary since the applications and capabilities are embedded in the device. They have an autonomy of about three hours, but they have a very fast recharge -about 45 minutes- thanks to the fact that they include a USB type C port.

This is the second version

Also the second version of the Hololens is much more comfortable than the first version since they are designed to be worn continuously for several hours and made of carbon fiber. In the first version, all the weight was on the front, which made wearing them for more than half an hour become somewhat uncomfortable. Now they weigh the same, but the center of gravity is in the part of the ears, which makes them more comfortable. In the back is the battery, and also the glasses are raised in the form of a visor to be able to interact with other people.

The price of the HoloLens 2, which are not sold to the general public, and are only available for use cases in the industrial and healthcare sector, for example, is around $ 3,500, although they are also available for companies in renting format and paying a license per month per user.

When putting on the glasses, the first thing the device does is calibrate the eye tracking. The second version of the HoloLens has made a quantum leap in terms of immersion thanks to the doubling of its field of view , while maintaining the holographic density of 47 pixels per degree of vision. In addition, through the new depth sensor (Time of Flight Depth Sensor) combined with semantic understanding and integrated artificial intelligence (AI), the device allows to manipulate holograms directly with the same intuitive gestures that are used to interact with physical objects. In the real world. And all this based on the own technology that Microsoft already had in its Kinect console, invented by the Israeli company PrimeSense and later bought by Apple.

The screen of the HoloLens 2 is larger than those of the first version, and projects the images in horizontal format directly in the eyes thanks to a system of mirrors. In addition, through the front sensors, the environment is scanned with a spatial mapping that allows making the link between the real and virtual world, such as for example that certain virtual objects fall on a real table. It’s like in Minority Report, but without the need to wear gloves, like in the movie. And also, under the glasses there is another pair of sensors that what they do is analyze the eye to authenticate the user through the iris, in addition to the aforementioned mapping of the eye for eye tracking.

The HoloLens glasses have two processors. One normal, and another processor for artificial intelligence. Thanks to this chip with AI, the glasses learn to understand and analyze what is in the environment so that it can offer us solutions and alternatives to certain problems, and even for the recognition of objects in certain situations.

Environments such as industrial, energy, healthcare, logistics or architecture and engineering are already transforming their business processes, thanks to the opportunities of mixed reality and Microsoft’s intelligent management platform, Dynamics 365, which provides a system immersive that is revolutionizing learning and process standardization through “step-by-step guides”, with holographic instructions and object recognition.

In Spain, Microsoft has Plain Concepts as the first partner in the field of mixed reality, who is in charge of developing tailor-made solutions to respond to the specific needs of each organization in order to take advantage of the advantages of Hololens 2 in multiple scenarios. and sectors.
