Neil Blomkamp, a native of South Africa, has emerged as one of the directors most loved by lovers of science fiction. After his rise to international fame with ‘District 9’, the filmmaker has had a certain journey in the Hollywood industry and now, more than a decade later, he has set off to carry out the sequel to his debut feature. It is true that his technique on the special effects, as well as the remarkable direction in terms of rhythm, were qualitative triggers that earned him the recognition of the public and audience, it is his narrative that has made him stand out within the genre. Social criticism has been an inherent part of his three works that, in ‘District 9’, left a dramatic aroma of the most overwhelming. Therefore, that Neil Blomkamp wants to return to his origins to expand the universe of aliens in refugee camps, is presented as pleasant news for all those who were amazed in 2009 by one of the South African films with the most international tour of the world. Neil Blomkamp already works on ‘District 10’ Since the premiere of ‘Chappie’ in 2015, Neil Blomkamp has been focused on making short films. However, in addition to the premiere he is preparing for this year, the director has confirmed on his own Twitter account that he is already working on the script for the sequel to ‘District 9’: ‘District 10’. An advertisement that has caused a furor on the social network, filling the work he is currently doing with anticipation. For the writing work he has relied on two of his regular collaborators.Terry Tatchell worked side by side with Blomkamp on the screenplay for ‘District 9’ and ‘Chappie’, presenting herself as one of the best screenwriters of her generation who has also participated in two short films by the director. It is, therefore, his right hand in the making of his works and could not be absent for the sequel to his first film. In turn, the fetish actor of Neil Blomkamp, Sharlto Copley, this time abandons the interpretation to participate in the project from its very origins. A convergence between three figures of the seventh art that have already more than demonstrated their remarkable ability to leave works of an impeccable quality level. At the moment, the film is in the writing phase, so there is no official confirmation that it will leave to carry out. However, the reception that the first part obtained and the great legion of fans that it has been reaping over the years, are presented as more than enough reasons so that, at some point, we are witnesses of what Blomkamp has in mind to continue his story of aliens. Social allegories in science fiction cinema ‘District 9’, ‘Elysium’ and ‘Chappie’ have been the three films that the South African filmmaker has signed so far. Despite the fact that they all share the science fiction genre, the similarities between the feature films go one step further. Three films that keep a notable social criticism of the main problems that plague the world, serving as a channel for more reflective entertainment. Immigration and refugee camps starred in ‘District 9′, dealing with racism -in this case towards an extraterrestrial species – from the cruelty of a society that feels superior.’Elysium’ again delves into this theme, wrapping the story in the differentiation of social classes, establishing a hierarchy marked by wealth and poverty. Finally, ‘Chappie’ goes one step further and, while again discerning between social classes, delves into the condition of the human being and the importance of the context in which to be educated. Contemplating his filmography, it is to be expected that ‘District 10’ follow this narrative trail; serving to continue the story of Wikus Van De Merwe after becoming a member of this alien species. Failed projects and future releases Neil Blomkamp is no stranger to the comings and goings of Hollywood before bringing a film to the big screen; having suffered in his own flesh the cancellation of one of the most ambitious projects of his career: ‘Alien 5’. Due to this, despite the fact that he is already working on the script for ‘District 10’, we cannot guarantee that we will enjoy the sequel that the public has been waiting for so much. What is certain is that this year we will witness his return to the feature film format with ‘Demonic’. There is no guaranteed release date, nor an official synopsis; but Neil Blomkamp was commissioned to write and direct this film in secret during the pandemic, starring Chris William Martin and Andrea Agur. Thus, all those who missed the filmmaker are in luck, recovering one of the great eminences of modern cinema.
