Netflix, Disney + and HBO Max "take" more than 330 pesos each month from Mexicans

Streaming platforms such as Netflix, HBO Max, Disney, among others, have managed to dominate and change the way content is consumed online in the last four years.

According to the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT), between 2017 and 2020, the latest data available, subscriptions to video on demand services in Mexico almost doubled, going from 8.6 to 15.7 million . And the pandemic was one of the factors that helped push the use of these platforms to continue entertainment amid restrictions on social interaction to prevent the spread of the virus.

While in the first quarter of 2019, a user paid an average of 226 pesos for the services of streaming platforms; In the last quarter of 2020, the average payment was 331 pesos, which means an increase of 46.4%.

The IFT estimates that the revenue of streaming video providers went from 621 million dollars to 1,271 million dollars from 2018 to 2020.

Platform with subscription or free?

Given the great variety of video on demand applications that arrive in the country, the subscription modalities have also varied.

The IFT explains that although there are free platforms, consumers continue to opt for paying a subscription to access audiovisual content, because this modality can be shared or the programming of the platforms can be seen on simultaneous screens and it is even possible to download the content.

In 2018, the second preferred modality to view content was through free streaming , but two years later consumers were already willing to pay for platforms without advertising, while free ones became a less demanded option.
