New Delhi – India wants to fight the heavy air pollution in the capital New Delhi with a 24 meter high tower.
The tower, which costs around 2.3 million euros (200 million rupees), has 40 large fan wheels and 5000 filters and can clean 1000 cubic meters of air per second, said New Delhi’s Prime Minister Arvind Kejriwal at the inauguration. The tower is an experiment and if there are good results, more of them will be used.
However, a number of experts criticize the project as a huge waste of money without a scientific basis. Instead, the reasons for air pollution must be addressed, said scientist Anumita Roychowdhury from the Center for Science and Environment. The government should take action against the excessive burning of garbage and promote electric vehicles and the use of clean fuels.
