New trial started around Limburg truck attack

The Limburg District Court is once again dealing with the case of a truck driver who intentionally drove other vehicles together in 2019. The Supreme Court had decided accordingly.

Limburg – More than two years after the truck attack in Limburg, the case is once again occupying the judges.

On Friday, the Limburg Regional Court reopened the trial against the man who is said to have intentionally driven the truck into stationary vehicles at a traffic light intersection in October 2019 and pushed them together. 18 people were injured in the incident in downtown Limburg. The background to the renewed hearing is a corresponding decision by the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) in Karlsruhe.

In November 2020, the Limburg district court sentenced the then 33-year-old defendant to nine years in prison for attempted murder, among other things. In addition, it decided that the man, who is considered to be less criminally responsible, should come to an addiction treatment facility. The judges assumed two elements of murder: malice and the use of a substance dangerous to the public.

Revision at the Supreme Court

The defendant, who comes from Syria, appealed the decision to the Federal Court of Justice – which was successful in one respect. The chief judge left the basic conviction for attempted murder untouched. However, they found that there was no viable evidence of an insidious approach. According to the Limburg court spokesman, the new trial will therefore deal in particular with the question of malice and a possible change in the amount of the total sentence. He expected the trial to be comparatively short.

In the first trial, the accused testified, among other things, that he suffered from memory gaps and traumatic experiences in his home country. He also stated that he had smoked an extremely strong joint shortly before the accident. dpa
