Perhaps an excess of sales call FKK Volksdorf Sommerbad the best nudist beach in Hamburg, since it is the only nudist beach in Hamburg but this natural lake is really a destination. Located in the northeast of the city in the Volksdorf district, this lake is dedicated to naturists and nudists.
Actually, that’s not so strange for German beaches, especially in eastern Germany. But it is seldom a place dedicated exclusively to naked bathing. If you are a nudist enthusiast (known as FKK in Germany) or a newbie with body shyness, this guide will prepare you to visit the best nude beach in Hamburg.
The best nude beach in Hamburg
Open since 1981, FKK Sommerbad Volksdorf is operated by the Hamburg Federation of Naturism and Family Sports eV (HFK) of Hamburg.
The FKK Sommerbad offers shady areas surrounded by large trees on long green lawns and a sparkling sandy beach. The waters are well maintained with plenty of room for swimming and splashing on the closed 50m or freestyle lanes. For the competitive swimmer, there are starting blocks and a 1m and 3m springboard. On the more relaxed side of things, there is a waterslide to see all the other people naked before descending into the refreshing waters.
The beach has immaculate amenities like changing rooms, showers, a playground, a restaurant, and several sports fields. There are youth leagues that take advantage of the extensive facilities such as volleyball, badmitten, tennis and Tischtennis (table tennis). A lifeguard ensures that the whole game is safe and every year there is a course where you can train to be a lifeguard. There is even a picturesque sauna right by the lake at Haus am See so that Germans can reach the pinnacle of good health – good steam.
The lake is mixed so you can sunbathe and swim naked, as well as enjoy sports activities without the burden of your clothes. Contrary to the expectations of some newcomers that a totally naked place would be sexually oriented, Sommerbad has a very relaxed and friendly vibe and is popular with families. There are even class trips!
If you are not sure whether sunbathing and swimming naked is the right thing for you, you can wear a bathing suit (but not in the sauna). You will likely be comfortable stripping at the end of your visit.
